Dear {{Constituent First Name}},
January has been a difficult month for our nation. And yet, even in hardship, we have seen something powerful: people choosing solidarity over fear, and compassion over indifference.
History reminds us that images can awaken our shared humanity. The gaze of Sharbat Gula, the Afghan girl on the cover of National Geographic, helped the world see refugees not as statistics, but as people with dignity and resilience. Years later, the image of Alan Kurdi stirred hearts across the globe, including here in Northwest Arkansas, and inspired local action that led to the founding of Canopy NWA nearly ten years ago.
These images did not argue or explain. They bore witness and reminded us of our capacity to respond with care.
The images from Minnesota last month were difficult to see, but they also sparked something meaningful. Alongside concern and uncertainty, we saw neighbors show up for one another. We were encouraged by a recent court ruling that halted the unlawful targeting, arrest, and detention of legally admitted refugees in Minnesota, a reminder that compassion and justice still matter.
Closer to home, we have been deeply moved by the response of our Northwest Arkansas community. This past weekend, small businesses and local partners stepped forward with generous donations and acts of solidarity, reminding newcomers that they belong here.
February is Black History Month. We were honored to join the Beloved Community Festival and the NWA MLK Council at Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in January to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. This month and year-round, we celebrate the contributions and leadership of the African diaspora community, and we proudly champion the African and Black Latino former-refugee community in Northwest Arkansas.
As we move into February and the rest of 2026, our hope is that this spirit continues to guide us, meeting uncertainty with grace and building a community rooted in welcome.
We will continue sharing stories of the meaningful contributions our new neighbors are making across the region. I invite you to read our latest blog featuring one of our entrepreneurs. And please be on the lookout for ways to get involved, starting with our Diaper Drive launching on Monday in Siloam Springs and Fayetteville.
With gratitude and hope,
Khalid Ahmadzai Senior Director of Partnerships
