The Latest News
While the refugee program remains largely suspended with only narrow exemptions, the White House recently increased the Presidential Determination for refugee admissions from a historic low of 7,500 to 17,500, a small step forward. The additional 10,000 slots are for Afrikaners from South Africa.
The purpose of refugee resettlement is to provide protection to people fleeing persecution who have no safe path forward. For decades, the United States has offered that protection to individuals and families from around the world based on vulnerability and need, with a historic average of 80,000 individuals receiving protection per year. That commitment should remain essential to this work.
Northwest Arkansas is the Most Welcoming Community
I want to be very clear: if you arrive in Northwest Arkansas to start a new life- whether for a corporate move, an educational opportunity, to be near family, to enjoy the natural beauty of the Ozarks, or through the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program, you deserve to be welcomed here.
Especially if you have lived through trauma, whether you are an Afrikaner from South Africa or an Afghan, you deserve to be welcomed with dignity, compassion, and respect. At Canopy, we stand with refugees, and we firmly believe the community does as well.
How to Welcome Well
Welcoming well means keeping families together, ensuring people can reach safety, and creating pathways for newcomers to contribute their talents and build their futures here.
Current federal policies, including travel bans affecting nationals of dozens of countries and the ongoing suspension of most refugee admissions, make that vision more difficult to achieve. Reuniting families strengthens our communities, our economy, and our shared future.
Even amid uncertainty, Canopy remains committed to welcoming newcomers and advocating for policies that keep families together. The future of refugee resettlement can and should look like welcoming newcomers and reuniting families who are not yet united with their loved ones in the U.S.

We’re collecting sewing machine donations to support the women of Inspired Hands as they build skills, income, and independence through their work. New machines can be purchased via this link, and we also accept very gently used machines in
good working condition at our Fayetteville office.
